It is an appalling story that tells us about two mysterious hired headhunters, AI and Max, who wanted to hunt a fellow, heavyweight boxer Ole Andreson, only to please a friend of theirs. They searched for their prey at Henry's Lunch Room somewhere in America one evening but were dejected when the desired fellow did not approach over there. They left this mysterious place leaving behind looming shadows of moral corruption and death. When Ole Andreson was visited by Nick and told about the head-hunters, he didn't show any shock. The sadness was at his center.

Perhaps something was dead in him, and what was dead was hope. For where no hope is left, is left no fear. He was extremely despair, so he reacted to Nick, "Thanks for coming to tell me about it", "I'm through with all that running! around" and "There ain't (are not) anything to do now". He was watching toward the blank wall which is the notion of his hopeless mind.

The Killers" is a story of crime. It deals with the theme of moral corruption, death and murder. Two persons, Al and Max, were dressed in long black coats under which shot-guns were hidden. Their behaviour with the waiter George, the servant Nick and the cook Sam was very harsh, cruel and impolite. After eating food, Al took Sam and Nick into the kitchen and tied them together. It gives us a glimpse of American society which flourishes on murder, disorder and lawlessness. The atmosphere of the Henry's Lunch Room is full of suspense, horror and mystery. Although the actual murder does not take place in the story but Hemingway succeeds in creating the danger of death before the mind of the reader.
